International Training Course on Sabo Engineering and Water Induced Disaster Countermeasures.

The Government of the Republic of Indonesia and the Government of Japan has cooperated with each other in conducting a training course entitled “The International Training Course on Sabo Engineering and Water Induced Disaster Countermeasures, 2001” at Sabo Technical Centre (STC), Yogyakarta held on duration September 19 to October 23, 2001.

The technical cooperation in the field of Sabo Engineering between the Government of Indonesia and the Government of Japan have been conducted since 1970. In spite of that Indonesia has many experiences to overcome disaster caused by eruption and sediment related disaster. Therefore, Indonesia is assumed capable to transfer experiences to neighboring countries in mitigating natural disaster caused of volcanic eruption and sediment related disaster. The fourth stage for five years cooperation between the Government of Indonesia and the Government of Japan through TCDC Programme of State Secretariat of the Republic of Indonesia and TCTP Programme of JICA starting with the implementation of this international training course. The objects of the training course in the fourth stage of cooperation were focused not only in Sabo engineering but also water induced disaster countermeasures.

The Purpose of the course was to provide participants from Asia and Pacific countries with an opportunity to update and upgrade relevant techniques and knowledge of Sabo engineering and water induced disaster countermeasures and thus to contribute to find a way to solve manifold problems related to Sabo engineering and water induced disaster countermeasures in compliance with the specific features of each country.

At the end of the course, the participants were expected to have:
- Acquired the ability to essential knowledge and practical experience of Sabo engineering and water induced disaster countermeasures and its related technology.
- Refreshed and improved their traditional technique relevant to Sabo engineering and water induced disaster countermeasures.

The training course was attended by fourteen (15) participants, consist of nine (10) participants come from Asia and Pacific countries and five (5) participants from host country Indonesia. Those participants were (1). Mr. Roland C. Viray (Philippines), (2). Mr. Nguyen Hiep (Vietnam), (3). Mr. Eric Aba (PNG), (4). Mr. Sipapa Titi (Samoa), (5). Mr. Md. Mofazzal Hossain (Bangladesh), (6). Mr. Tian Yuzhu (People’s Republic of China), (7). Mr. Surapan Chaichana (Thailand), (8). Mr. Nikhom Keosavang (Lao PDR), (9). Mr. Bounhieng Souvannahane (Lao PDR), (10). Mr. Sundar Prasad Sharma (Nepal), (11). Mr. Frdy Vijaya (Indonesia), (12). Mr. Tjok Bagus Purnawarman (Indonesia), (13). Mr. Endar Margono (Indonesia). (14). Mr. Joko Mulyono (Indonesia), (15). Mr. Sumudi Kartono (Indonesia).

The schedule of the international training course had been implemented well, without too many changes. Beside the official programme of the training course such as lectures in classroom, seminar, field trips, laboratory works, etc. The organizing committee also arranged social and cultural programmes for the participants.
Even though, the participants came from different countries, social, culture and profession but they could communicate each other and enjoyed the training programme well. Most of participants also found the training programme very informative, interesting, and useful for their job. They always felt at home and never have any serious difficulties.
