The Opening Ceremony of the Internship for Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) of The Philippines Youth Muslim Leaders West Nusa Tenggara, 10 October 2016

The Internship for ARMM of The Philippines Youth Muslim Leaders was held in Aston Inn Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara from 9 to 15 October 2016. The internship was participated by 16 (sixteen) participants from the ARMM of the Philippines which consists of Muslim Youth Leaders, officials from Philippines Commission on Population (POPCOM) and officials from ARMM of The Philippines Department of Education.

 

The Internship for ARMM of The Philippines Youth Muslim Leaders was opened by Dr. Sanjoyo, Deputy of Training, Research and Development of National Population and Family Planning Board (BKKBN) and attended by Mrs. Rika Kiswardani, Head of Bureau for Foreign Technical Cooperation, Mrs. Martha Santoso Ismail, Assistant Representative of UNFPA Indonesia Office,       Mr. Lalu Makripudin, Head of West Nusa Tenggara Provincial Office of National Populaton and Family Planning Board, representative from Office of Governor of West Nusa Tenggara and Office of West Lombok District.

The Opening Ceremony started by remarks from Mrs. Martha Santoso from UNFPA and in her remarks, she emphasized the importance of invensting teenage girls especially in education and health, including adolescent reproductive health that can save their future, save their families, societies and their nations. Indonesia is a country with majority of Muslim population and Islamic teachings play important role in the life of Indonesian society. She expected this internship program will be mutually benefiting for both Indonesia and the Philippines where the participants can learn knowledge and skills regarding the family planning in Indonesia and Indonesia also can get some inputs and feedbacks from the participants.

Mrs. Rika Kiswardani in her remarks stated that this Internship program is part of Indonesia’s commitment to improve Technical Cooperation among Developing Countries which implemented under South-South and Triangular Cooperation, coordinated by Ministry of State Secretariat, supported by UNFPA an implemented by PULIN BKKBN. This internship program is derived from the Memorandum of Understanding between BKKBN and the Commission on Population of the Republic of the Philippines (POPCOM) signed in 2012 concerning the cooperation in the field of population, family planning and reproductive health, gender mainstreaming etc. Compare to other  trainings has been implemented so far, this internship is more unique because it is a tailor-made training based on the request from POPCOM. It is highly expected that the participants will have comprehensive understanding on the role of Muslim Religious Leaders and Faith Based Organization in family planning and also learn about the linkage of Islamic Core Value in Indonesia’s family planning policy.

The Internship program was officially opened by Dr. Sanjoyo which in his remarks stated that this intership designed by adapting the global training on Developing Strategic Partneship with Moslem Religious Leaders in Family Planning. Indonesia has an unique approach in family planning program which stressing on the effort to improve family welfare through regulation of children. The perspective of the family should be changed toward qualified smaller families in the entry point of the family planning program. To achieve these goals, BKKBN has involving not only related government institutions but also development agencies and civil society for effective and necessary change with wider communicty support. The support and endorsement of Muslim Religiou Leaders to new idea of family planning has helped Indonesia Muslim community to accept and adopte the new approaches of family planning. As the result, many Muslim Religious Leaders are actively involved in BKKBN advocay program by campaigning and supporting some form of familly planning services among Indonesia Muslim Community. Through this internship, it’s expected that the program will be benefited the participants and they will gain knowledge, skills and lesson-learned that could further accelerate the progress of family planning program in the Philippines.

After the internship program officially opened, all the participants had chance to take a group photo with the representative from BKKN, Ministry of State Secretariat, UNFPA and West Nusa Tenggara Province.

The internship will provide participants with information on the strategic roles of the Islamic Boarding School in providing Adolescent Reproductive Health education. The internship will also enrich participants’ knowledge and skill to develop strategic advocate and IEC (Information, Education and Communication) to their stakeholders. From October 10th to 15th, the participants will have in-class training where they will learn about family planning program in Indonesia and reproductive health progarm in West Nusa Tenggara. They also will go to visit some places in West Nusa Tenggara such as SMAN 4 Praya, Islamic Boarding School (Pesantren Nurul Hakim), Youth-friendly ARH Services at Puskemas Gunung Sari, Community radio hotline services at Kantor Desa Lingsar, and PKBI Youth Centre.

The participants is also expected to develop lesson-learned and action plan as the result of this internship program. The action plan will be their tools to develop a program that could be implemented in their home country.
